Understanding Learning Challenges of Young Adults with Brighton Launch

When it comes to finding a developmental disabilities program in Toronto for young children and teens, there are plenty of choices available. But what about later on, as teenagers approach adulthood? This is a challenging time for any young person, but it’s particularly hard for those with learning difficulties.

Brighton Launch aims to fill the gap with a range of programs to suit most needs. From providing essential training in literacy and numeracy to improving communication skills, handling money and even an onsite work experience centre, students are encouraged to progress at their own pace.

What makes Brighton Launch different?

Brighton Launch has been created to appeal specifically to older teens and young adults. Instead of having to find their own way in the world, students are fully supported through a range of activities and training modules according to their needs and preferences.

Programs can be undertaken full time or part time, so every participant can benefit from the parts of the programs that are most suitable for their needs. The full-time program runs from Monday to Friday and covers Independent Living Skills, including home management, nutrition, cooking, meal planning, budgeting and shopping.

The program also covers Workplace Skills and Careers, with modules covering technology and its uses, problem solving, workplace safety and career planning. In addition to offering supported placements outside the centre, Brighton Launch also has its own online store, Brighton Launch Creations, for which students can help to manufacture, package and sell bath products, including bath bombs and body scrubs.

Full-time students at Brighton Launch also receive dedicated training and support across a range of other spheres, including community skills such as using public transport and staying safe in the community. Social skills modules cover issues such as relationships, etiquette and self-management. Students also look at personal care issues, including fitness and relationships, giving them a thorough grounding in the most important aspects of their future lives.

Part-time programs also available

For students who don’t wish to enroll in the complete program, there are two part-time options. The Life Skills Program runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from September to June, offering training and support for any students who don’t wish to complete the Workplace Skills modules.

Alternatively, some students may prefer to attend the Work Experience Program, which runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 5pm. In addition to the onsite shop, Brighton Launch offers work placements in the wider community.

Choosing the most appropriate program for developmental disabilities in Toronto

With so many options when it comes to programs for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, in Toronto, it can be difficult to choose the right one. We suggest that you first make a checklist of the features and facilities that are non-negotiable. That makes it easier to start narrowing down your selection until only the most suitable ones remain.

Brighton Launch believes strongly that its revolutionary approach provides young adults with the skills and opportunities to help them become well-rounded individuals. From learning to live with a degree of independence to developing valuable workplace skills, young adults can develop and grow at their own pace, enabling them to lead more fulfilling lives.
